Abstract:

The use of high-pressure vessels for ethanol fermentation is not widely renowned. Thus a basic understanding of the key design and operational aspects at a bioprocess level becomes necessary. It is proposed that a comprehensive bioprocess model will be designed using first principles and used to develop optimal design and operating protocols. This dynamic model will enable predictive modeling of cell growth, substrate consumption, and product formation, as well as the CO2 evolution and fixation and the interplay between CO2 accumulation, system pressure and pH. A variety of initial and process variables will be simulated and compared with experimental results. It is then proposed to test the influence of the relevant process variables via sensitivity analysis.
