Abstract:
Boiler tubes in power plants can be subjected to highly aggressive conditions including high operating temperatures and pressure. This can lead to structural damages to the tubes over the years. With a lack of accessibility to the damaged structures due to the unsafe and hazardous conditions, it would make sense to deploy a robot to carry out the dirty tasks that humans cannot. For this application, a lizard-inspired robot has been proposed that would locomote along these tubes while checking the structural integrity of these tubes in places where it is practically impossible and unsafe for humans to reach. The robot is capable of traversing up and down the long boiler tubes as well as overcoming any difficult bends between the tubes.
