Abstract: 

In this report, I present the design and characteristics of a novel multi-DOF actuator segment consisting of 3 soft fabric actuators which lack any rigid internal structures. The actuators are flexible, lightweight and possess high load capability as well as capable of linear contraction, multi-DOF bending, and twisting actions. Each actuator bends when inflated with air, and the whole module twists and contract vertically when they are all inflated simultaneously. A key potential application would be as an extra appendage for patients with loss of motor skills as the actuator modules can be linked to form a full arm to handle and grip objects.
